2013
So, what has Sarah Swirled been up to this year?
Well, In February I was one third of a team organising the NADA (Northern Arabic Dance Association) AGM which this year took place in Galgate, just outside of Lancaster. Admittedly, I was the treasurer so didn't have as much prep work to do as Anne or Desna, but.......
As well as the AGM, we had a Health and Safety talk, one dance workshop, and a music workshop with Guy Schalom from the Baladi Blues Ensemble. The Baladi Blues Ensemble were our special guests for the day, along with the lovely Claire Barnfather (nee Novis). We were also priviledged to have a fabulous caterer (Barbara Conroy) who not only provided food for us all, but also kept the teas and coffees topped up, AND supplied the most fabulous cakes!
A great day was had by all, and I did my first ever solo to a live band.

March was a busy month!
On 2nd March we were invited to dance at an event in Preston town centre. The University of Preston had organised a Trade Fair and during the day had laid on different entertainers. I took along some of my dance students, some of whom had not been dancing long, and we entertained Preston. We had a good hour to fill and so we danced several different styles of belly dance to show the general public that there is much more to this dance form than most people believe.

Not only did we have some group dances, we also included solos and a duet to keep the crowds entertained. The weather was dry, thankfully, though a little chilly, especially when it came to wearing 2-piece costumes!
Our next event occured as a direct result of the Trade Fair, and was the following week. A charity event was taking place in Blackburn but unfortunately the entertainment that had been booked had had to pull out and so they were in desperate need of help. Luckily for us, some of my girls and myself were available. And so we found ourselves in the company of the Mayor of Blackburn and guests.
Amazing how being in the right place at the right time can work out for you!
The following month, in April, I found myself and some of my girls dancing for the Mayor of Blackburn at the Mayor's Ball. We had been personally invited.

Not only did we take part in the parade in the morning, we also danced on the stage (or should I say infront of the stage on the grass). As with the Trade Fair, we danced several different styles of dance for added interst, as well as a group dance, solos and a duet.
I wonder what the rest of the year will bring?
